Feelings change, Memories don’t

I am swimming in a sea of faces,
Where everyone is in a hurry to finish their races.
Looking around I see all strangers,
Having emotions of happiness and anger.

And suddenly, in the crowd, I see a friend,
Only to remember how the friendship did end.
The memories come flooding one by one,
The first day we met in college under the hot sun.
The second day turned out to be even more fun,
And the subsequent days seemed to run.

Laughing, teasing and joking all day,
We never stopped come what may.
The professors gave us dirty looks,
And the batch mates around us looked up, glaringly, from their books.

Lunch break was a hilarious affair,
With tears in eyes and gasping for air.
We used to laugh and laugh so much,
People across the tables looked to judge.

Metro rides were full of stares,
Which made us wonder, were we so rare?
Going places excited me to a whole new extent,
But the plan being cancelled made me resent.

I never realized how the days turned into years,
But one day you found someone else more near.
This was not what hurt me most,
But what happened to the friendship of which we used to boast?
More and more we grew apart,
With each passing day it broke my heart

Until one day I realized there is nothing to be sad about,
But just that our friendship had run its course out.
Wiping off the tears I thanked you,
For making me stronger and somebody new.

People come and people go,
You taught me the difference on how to know.
